What to Expect in Your First Salt Therapy Session

You may feel lighter and renewed after your first salt therapy session as if you’ve floated into a blissful state of relaxation. So, how should you prepare for your first halotherapy session and what should you expect? We have all the answers in this article, so keep reading.

Key Takeaways

  • Your halotherapy session is your “you time”, so feel free to read, nap, meditate, or listen to music with headphones.

  • Salt therapy often has a naturally relaxing effect on your body, which allows you to unwind.

  • You may feel some relief after one session but for the best results, you need to come consistently.

  • Salt’s antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties work to remove a build-up of mucus in your airways, clear your skin, and help you breathe easier.

So you’ve decided to come in for your first salt therapy session. Congratulations! You’re joining the plethora of people who regularly experience the many health and wellness benefits of salt therapy, aka halotherapy. We completely understand if you have any jitters about your first session, but don’t worry, you’re in good hands.

Several questions might be going through your mind, from what kind of clothing to wear to what to expect during a session. No need to be in the dark. In this article, we’ll walk you through what you need to do to prepare and what your session will be like. Ready? Let’s dive in.

Before Your Salt Therapy Session

We recommend that you arrive at least 15 minutes early for your session. Our team will listen to your health and wellness goals and create a custom plan for you.

We recommend changing into one of our luxury spa robes, but it is not mandatory. If you prefer not to change then please wear loose, comfortable clothing, preferably in light colors since salt will show more on dark colors. Please also wear socks.

We also ask that you refrain from wearing scents (perfume, smoke, etc.) as a courtesy to scent-sensitive guests. The session will be 30-45 minutes long.

During Your Session

Prepare to see a different environment than you’ve seen before. The walls and floors will be covered with salt, and there will be chairs to sit in for your session. A device known as the halogenator will grind and disperse pharmaceutical-grade salt into the salt cave.

We play reflective music in the background while you relax, and breathe in microscopic, airway-cleaning, skin-soothing salt particles. Remember that this is your time so you just have to sit back and relax.

Read a book, meditate, or even take a nap as the salt particles penetrate deep within your respiratory system and become absorbed in your skin. For your first session, we always suggest that you leave your phone behind, try to sit in stillness, and enjoy the meditative spa music.

As a first-timer, you might experience a slight tickle in your throat – but that’s just the salt doing its job. You also may cough or hear a couple of coughs from across the room. There’s no cause for alarm, though, as no bacteria can survive in such a salty environment.

Salt has a calming effect on your body so be prepared to relax and unwind during your salt therapy session. You deserve this soothing time to yourself.

After Your Session

Many people experience the draining of their sinus right away or hours later after their first session. Several people also say that they get better, deeper sleep the same night. Generally, you can expect to feel lighter and renewed – as if you’ve floated into a relaxing state of euphoria.

To keep this relaxed state going and experience all of the other health and wellness benefits of salt therapy, you will want to begin a consistent routine. We recommend 2x per week for 3 weeks then 1x per week thereafter

Here are some benefits you should expect after a few halotherapy sessions:

  • Your body absorbs essential minerals such as calcium, iron, and potassium better

  • You receive more immune system support

  • Mucus breakdown and reduced inflammation

  • Soothing skin conditions like eczema and acne.
